World at War has more mature themes than previous Call of Duty releases, and is open-ended, providing players with multiple ways to accomplish objectives, but generally has the same gameplay as previous versions of the franchise. Players fight alongside AI-controlled teammates. They help in-game missions by providing fire support, taking down enemies, and clearing rooms to enter. When playing the Wii version of the game, the Wii Remote and Nunchuk target enemies with motion controls.
The game features a variety of World War II weapons and technologies. The player accesses it while playing but can only carry two weapons other than hand grenades. Weapons and ammo from fallen enemies or allies can be picked up to replace weapons in the player’s arsenal. Players can also find weapons with additional accessories, including weapons equipped with rifle grenades, scopes, and bayonets.
Characters can be placed in one of three positions: standing, crouching, or prone, each of which affects the character’s movement speed, accuracy, and stealth. Using cover helps the player avoid enemy fire or recover health after taking heavy damage because there is no armor or additional health. When the character takes damage, the edges of the screen will turn red and the character’s heart rate will increase. If the character stays out of the fire, he can heal. When the character is within the explosion radius of a real grenade, a marker will show the direction of the grenade, helping the player decide whether to run away or deflect it towards the enemy.
