Getting Over It revolves around a player-controlled character who resides in a large metal cauldron and is named Diogenes after the philosopher who lived in the pot. He wields a Yosemite hammer, which he can use to grab objects and move around. Using a mouse or trackpad,[note 1] the player attempts to move the man’s upper body and mass to climb a steep mountain.[3]
The game is accompanied by voice commentary by Bennett Foddy discussing various philosophical topics. The commentary also offers quotes regarding frustration and perseverance when players lose significant progress, as well as when players reach certain milestones in the game.
As players progress up the mountain, they are constantly at risk of losing some or all of their progress; There are no checkpoints.[8] The game ends when the player reaches the highest point on the map, entering space. The final credits appear and at the end a message asks the player if they are recording gameplay. If the player indicates they have not done so, the game will provide access to a chat room containing other players who have recently completed the game.
