Grand Theft Auto is made up of six levels spread across three main cities; each location is based on a real city in the United States, with an alternate name:
Liberty City (New York), San Andreas (San Francisco) and Vice City (Miami). The progression is linear, as each completed level automatically unlocks the next level in the sequence. The player starts the game by choosing one of eight characters (four in the PlayStation version) and naming them, although this choice is purely aesthetic and does not affect the overall gameplay.
