Starfield is an action role-playing video game. The player can switch between first-person and third-person perspectives at any point in the game. Starfield features an open world like a region in the Milky Way, containing both fictional and non-fictional planetary systems, with the player being able to land on over 1,000 planets and a number of moons and stations unknown universe. Much of the landscape in the game is procedurally generated; they were later modified and crafting content developed around them. The game will generate the terrain of a planet and extraterrestrial flora and fauna based on its star system and atmosphere, as well as places of interest as the player approaches a planet. The largest city in the game, New Atlantis, is the largest fictional city developed by Bethesda. As the player explores the game world, he will encounter many non-playable characters (NPCs), some of whom can join the player’s crew. These NPCs can assist the player in battle, carry items, or during encounters, talking to other NPCs on behalf of the player. Some may comment on player choices. Players can place crew members in any outpost they have built. Each companion character has their own unique skills and abilities. Some recruitable NPCs can be lured by the player.
At the start of the game, the player can customize his character, which is a silent protagonist. This includes choosing their body type, appearance, background, and characteristics. Choosing the player character’s background will unlock three starter skills. As players progress, they unlock additional traits that can help or hinder them. For example, the Introvert trait gives the player more stamina when traveling alone, but less stamina when traveling with companions. Traits can be removed through quests or certain actions. As players progress, they gain experience and level up, allowing them to unlock abilities contained in five separate skill trees:
Physical, social, combat, science and technology. Each skill can be ranked by completing related challenges. Various guns, explosives and melee weapons can be used to defeat the enemy. Most weapons are customizable via attachments. Equipping a telescopic sight improves weapon accuracy, while a suppressor can create stealth-focused gameplay. The player can also equip various jet packs (called booster packs), which aid him both in combat and through harsh or impassable environments. When landing on a celestial body, the force of gravity acting on the player changes according to the mass of the body. This can affect combat.
